A recent article by Associated Press (AP) writer, Joyce Rosenberg points to the surge in small business sales that is being driven by retiring baby boomers and an improving economy. According to the article, the first quarter of 2013 experienced a 56 percent increase in deals from the same period in 2012.
Two major factors seem to be at work here. First, the number of baby boomers reaching retirement age is increasing rapidly. But second, the number of buyers for these business has also increased, driving up sales. The article states that according to a Pepperdine University study, retirement was the number one contributor to business sales in the fourth quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013.
