The initial major shift in the pet retail landscape came with the advent of the big box retailers, which drew customers from independent, local retailers and grocery. From 2010 to 2016, PetSmart and Petco grew from 50.8% to 62.5% of the U.S. pet store market.

Wave 2: Online Shopping

As technology developed and customers grew comfortable with buying online, consumers began shifting more and more pet product purchases that way. In 2016, Amazon experienced 40% year-over-year growth in pet product sales, reaching $2 billion in the $67.5 billion pet market. In pet food alone…
